Definition

Phrasal verbs are used by all native English speakers with great frequency. It’s impossible to speak proper english without using them. Some thoughts can only be expressed by them. In many cases, there is a latin-based verb that can describe the action, but a native English speaker will use a phrasal verb instead. For instance, if you are playing chess with an American friend, and he is winning the game, in a matter of a few moves he will have you in checkmate. You could say: I desist. There´s a chance he won´t understand you. The word desist exists in English but it is hardly used. Rather than desist you must say: I give up. This phrasal verb expresses exactly what you want to say. That’s why phrasal verbs are so important, some thoughts are impossible to say otherwise.

M

MAKE UP

(Avril Lavigne)

Layin' on the couch just,
Hangin' with my boys
We're chillin' up the house tonight
I'm being myself
I'm nobody else ‘cause
This is what we do alright
You'll always find

[chorus]

I'm not wearing any make-up,
Won't hide who I am,
I'll be what I am
I'm just being honest with myself once again
I'm my only friend
Kickin’ off my shoes
I’m strummin’ my guitar
I’m singin’ songs about my life
If i could tell the truth
I’d tell you what i meant by
Me, myself, and i
You’ll always find

[chorus]

No more mirrors
No more vanity
Give it all away for free
Donate to charity
I am happy in my skin
I drown my heart is not the same
You’ll always find

[chorus]

Lay on my couch, hang with my boys, chill at my house tonight,
Lay on my couch, hang with my boys, chill at my house tonight,
Lay on my couch, hang with my boys, chill at my house tonight,
Lay on my couch, hang with my boys, chill at my house tonight
